Today Hector Beltran Leyva , the famous drug kingpin and organized crime ring leader, died because of a heart attack. This man oversaw one of the deadliest criminal enterprises in our history, if you exclude rebellions, and together with Joaquin Lopez Loera he made ten billion dollars shipping cocaine to the United States.
So what? well. our focus so far with the misguided mini war on terror drug wars was to capture the leaders of cartels hoping that their structure would be too fragile to survive, little did our government expect for billion dollar multinational corporations to have a rule of succession, or even a contingency plan.
Jesus...Just how stupid were they?
Ever since 2006 the army just walks on the streets of countless towns, and do so in an ineffective way, and its been a topic of debate since. We just want to chang e...
But we’ve been here before; in 2012 when the current president also promised to get the army off the streets. Instead we saw the largest increase in crime since records are taken. I don’t know what to attribute this to, but Peña Nieto simply didn’t stand up to the challenge that his sexennial threw at him.
The current President Elect already showed his national defense strategy and it was criticized by members of his own party... the so called National Regeneration Movement party wants to keep the army on the streets, over a different name and we know it doesn’t work. We just do and it’s painful to think that they’re even considering the army. As one of his party members said himself “throwing a rock at a State Trooper yields a different result that throwing it at a Marine”
But the depressing fact about this country is that as long as people north of our border want drugs, we will be a hotspot for them. The thing about our border is that it isn’t just an imaginary line in sand... in many ways it’s an imaginary line across water, across the air, and across people; we can’t get rid of this issue by declaring the southern border a DMZ.
Anyway, you guys don’t even get the short end of the stick... Whenever a drug becomes un popular or uneconomic, these well funded operations already have a lot of infrastructure: bribes, guns, people, allegiances, and money to spare. They turn around and just try to enforce their ways, which inevitably include extortion, forceful labour, and terrorizing others.
There’s nothing cool about drug dealers, neither are they worthy of being presented on Netflix to make money. These people murdered hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed the lives of millions more. Sure, more people die in Mexico because of pollution but at least when we talk about climate change we don’t call it entertainment. But I digress.
I just think that... whatever we’re doing isn’t working. Whatever can be done is hard to discern, and in the end. This guy died today and Lopez Loera is in Jail but their legacy will live to torture and traumatize the masses for years to come... Which is the real emergency now.

I hear you, brother. The goal of the drug wars was to provide a market for US military contractors during times of 0f “ peace”. The Mexican government was just another customer. People have always, and will always, consume things to make them forget about their incongruent existance (whether it be a chemical or a religion).
Yeah, cartel leaders are some ruthless motherfuckers who will stop at nothing to take care of themselves. However, we’re on an auto enthusiast blog. Let’s not pretend like cartel leaders can even come close to touching the brutality of the companies that feed our beloved machines. Cocaine ain’t got nothing on oil.

It’s just so alarming that so much is spent (time, votes, money) expecting shit to change but it just staying the same. I mean, I didn’t vote for Obrador but still, he was meant to change things.. For fucks sake he’s been the face of the opposition party for the better part of two decades!
But shit will probably stay mostly the same.

Can’t fight human nature; as long as drugs exist there will be addicts. They tried prohibition on alcohol and it failed catastrophically. How is heroin, cocaine, and meth any different? Legalize it, tax it, and be done with it.
What a hundred billion dollars over 50 years
of law enforcement failed to do, could be ended by simple market forces. Big pharma cranking out certified-clean, pure narcotics for recreational consumption would put the cartels out of business practically overnight. Addicts will not go to their inner-city crack dealer and pay higher prices to a man who will not hesitate to have their legs broken for non-payment, when they could just as easily go down to the local drug store and buy a guaranteed-pure product, for cheaper, with a credit card from a company that will, at best, send some strongly worded letters demanding payment and ding your credit score if you don’t pay.

“ a lot of infrastructure: bribes, guns, people, allegiances, and money to spare.”
The amount of money really is insane.
https://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/17/magazine/how-a-mexican-drug-cartel-makes-its-billions.html
the economist ran an article that estimated 30% of revenues was spent on bribes.

Why is legalizing with provisions so offensive?

The problem with full & open legalized drugs means that you’re basically opening up the entire pharmacy to amateurs. Why control Viagra if heroin is freely available?
There’s a reason why prescription drugs are distributed on a prescription basis. Letting addicts go hog wild with cheaper and freely available hard drugs would basically result in accelerated Darwinism.

That’s true at it’s core: economics is more powerful than any army, just ask the Soviet Union...oh wait....

Well, if pharma companies could control the supply of addictive drugs they could improve the drugs to reduce some of the bad side effects. Also, Mexico ran a quasi-all-drugs-free system for half year with drugs like cocaine given in small controlled portions to the public and everyone loved it...

When it comes to addictive drugs, generally the part of them that works is also the part that makes them addictive. Pharma companies releasing new meds that work as well as Oxy or Vics without the addictive nature of them would be great, and certainly extremely lucrative for them.

Its still safer to have controlled addictive substances than the alternative...

...I don’t see a
problem here.
